Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], October 4 (ANI): Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC has welcomed the Maharashtra government’s decision to allow shops to operate 24/7 in Mumbai, excluding liquor outlets.
According to NC, Mumbai’s global status and infrastructure make it an ideal city for extended shopping hours.
“Mumbai is a global city. Look at the infrastructure. Look at the kind of people who have come and invested in India and with the dynamics of the better infrastructure, the need of the hour seems to be Mumbai 24-7,” Shaina NC told ANI, on Friday.
However, she emphasised that the government’s decision comes with certain prerequisites, such as ensuring the city’s culture and safety, particularly for working women.
She added, “But by reissuing a GR on the concept, we have also kept in mind that the culture of the city should be intact, the safety of the women and especially the working women should be intact.”
The Maharashtra government issued a government resolution (GR) on October 1, allowing shops and commercial establishments, including residential hotels, restaurants, eateries, theatres, places of public amusement or entertainment, to remain open 24 hours a day across the state.
The GR mentions that establishments involved in the sale and supply of liquor, including wine shops, beer bars, dance bars, hookah parlours, discotheques and permit rooms, cannot operate 24 hours.
NC pointed out that while some may claim the idea of 24/7 shopping is novel, the city was not previously equipped to handle it. However, with the current government’s infrastructure and safety measures in place, Mumbai is now ready for extended shopping hours. She emphasised that the Mahayuti government has taken steps to ensure that the city’s growth is balanced with its cultural heritage and safety.
“So, for all those who are trying to suggest it was their novel idea, was the city then equipped? Absolutely not. Is it equipped today? Yes, it is. Because the Mahayuti has ensured that 24×7 working of Mumbai comes with the disclaimer or comes with the prerequisites of having safety and security, CCTV cameras all across the city and ensuring that we grow from strength to strength, but we maintain our culture and civilisation.”
The Maharashtra government on Wednesday stated that all shops and establishments across the state, barring those involved in the sale and supply of liquor, can remain open round the clock.
The government has emphasised the importance of safety and security, with plans to install CCTV cameras across the city.
The decision is expected to boost Mumbai’s economy, create jobs, and attract tourists, aligning the city with global metropolitan standards.
The move is seen as a festive gift to businesses and consumers ahead of the Diwali and Christmas holidays. (ANI)
