Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], April 22 (ANI): A man identified as Mushtaq Ali alias Bacchu Don, wanted in multiple criminal cases, died after sustaining injuries during an escape attempt while in police custody. The incident occurred as a police team was returning from Amritsar to Jammu after arresting the accused, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Tuesday.
According to an official statement, a police party from Jammu was sent to Baba Batala in Amritsar, Punjab, on Monday to apprehend two wanted individuals with the assistance of the Punjab Police. The two accused, including Mushtaq Ali, son of Mohammad Sadiq and resident of Kikri Morh, Bari Brahmana, were arrested. Both were wanted in multiple criminal cases within the Jammu-Kathua-Samba range.
While returning from Amritsar, the accused reportedly asked the police to halt the vehicle, citing nature’s call. During the stop, both accused allegedly attacked the police personnel, attempted to snatch their weapons, and tried to escape, said the Jammu and Kashmir police.
The police party managed to bring the situation under control, but Mushtaq Ali, in an attempt to flee, fell on the road and sustained grievous injuries. He was immediately shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Jammu, where doctors declared him dead.
Four police personnel received minor injuries during the incident, and further investigation is underway, according to the police.
Following the incident, a case has been registered under FIR No. 33/2025 at the Police Station Bishnah, under the relevant sections of the law. Legal formalities have been initiated.
The police have also requested the District Magistrate of Jammu to constitute a board of doctors for conducting the post-mortem of the deceased and initiate a necessary inquiry into the matter.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir Police apprehended three alleged narco smugglers and seized 22 grams of a heroin-like substance during a routine vehicle checking operation at the Phalata naka point on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, officials said. (ANI)
