Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 1 (ANI): People from different communities in Kolkata took to the streets on Sunday, showcasing their anguish following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 9 in Kolkata.
Residents of the city held a protest march starting from College Square and marching towards the Dharmatala area of the city. Protesters were seen holding a banner that stated, “I want justice for my sisters” while marching towards Dharmatala.
TMC leaders and workers also held a protest in Kolkata today over the rape-murder case.
They demanded the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) disclose the progress in the investigation in the case so far and also for a provision for capital punishment in the Constitution for the culprits of such crimes.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the inaugural event of the 2-day National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam, reiterated that many strict laws have been made in the country for the safety of women.
“Today, atrocities against women, safety of children… are serious concerns of society. Many strict laws have been made in the country for the safety of women, but we need to make it more active. The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get,” PM Modi said.
Doctors have been holding protests in different states demanding justice for the victim whose body was found in the seminar hall of the state-run Medical College and Hospital earlier in August.
The doctors have also been demanding better security laws for healthcare professionals in the wake of this horrible and brutal incident.
The sexual assault of the trainee doctor has sparked massive outrage and shaken the conscience of the country.
The case has been transferred to the CBI from the Kolkata police following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The alleged murder and sexual assault of a female trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has triggered a war of words between the BJP, with the latter demanding the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.
