Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 4 (ANI): BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul on Monday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of spreading a “fake narrative” about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls in Bihar.
Paul claimed that Banerjee is trying to exploit Bengali sentiments to prevent the SIR from happening in Bengal. She alleged that IPAC is creating fake videos and attempting to manipulate public opinion.
Paul emphasised that the SIR process will be implemented in Bengal, just like in Bihar, to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the electoral rolls.
She asserted that the BJP will not allow illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh or Rohingyas to influence Bengal’s electoral process.
Agnimitra Paul said, “Mamata Banerjee is trying to spread a completely fake narrative. She has been busy making fake videos from her agency IPAC’s office. She doesn’t want SIR to happen here. So she has started playing with this Bengali sentiment. SIR, which has started in Bihar, will happen in Bengal, and we will not allow any illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh or Rohingyas to come to Bengal. TMC will finalise their documents and then vote for Mamata Banerjee. This will not happen.”
Paul highlighted the difference between the Bengali language spoken in India and Bangladesh, dismissing Banerjee’s attempts to create confusion among Bengali-speaking people.
She further said, “There is a difference in the Bengali language. The Bengali language I speak is completely different from the Bengali language spoken in Bangladesh… Mamata Banerjee, do not try to confuse and poison the minds of the people of Bengal.”
The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has claimed that there are nearly one crore Rohingya immigrants, Bangladeshi Muslim voters, deceased voters, duplicate entries, and fake voters in the electoral rolls of the State.
The BJP leader urged the Election Commission of India to remove these names from the voters’ list.
“There are nearly one crore Rohingya immigrants, Bangladeshi Muslim voters, deceased voters, duplicate entries, and fake voters in West Bengal. The Election Commission of India should remove these names to ensure the credibility of the voter list,” Adhikari told reporters here on Saturday.
On August 2, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called for a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, similar to the one currently underway in Bihar.
“SIR is a regular practice of the Election Commission of India. Even in the year 2002, the SIR exercise was carried out in West Bengal. Names of 20 lakh voters were removed from the voter list…It is the role of the Election Commission to rectify the voter list. A well-proof voter list is necessary to make our democracy vibrant,” Majumdar told reporters in Siliguri. (ANI)
